OPPROTUNITIES FOR STORYTELLING
Using this Ghibli Days style guide I made this year, this concept package would see how this style guide could take over a retail space in a way that amplifies their stories while retaining brand guidelines.
BEHIND THE DESIGN
Naturally, my first thought was to take over these three windows with the various patterns developed in the style guide. By combing through some references, a little exploration, and my own thoughts as a fan, the conclusion was to make character standees with dimensional graphics adorned on the glass for dimensionality.
Since Studio Ghibli character guidelines dictate that these separate IPs cannot interact with one another -- each character receives a thoughtful integration in the overall display.
MAIN WINDOW PANELS
The supporting elements adorned to the windows mask the display platforms the characters would stand on. Even through these scenes take place on land, sky, and sea, I have integrated the design at balanced levels so that each story flows cohesively. The Mei and Ponyo (left and right] standees facing inward is supported by exterior elements framing the three overall displays.
EVEN MORE DETAILS
Even though she does not receive a standee, Arietty (top) plays a crucial role in welcoming guests through those sliding doors, jumping into the excitement through these doors. Arietty does not receive a standee because, in-story, she's a tiny person that lives big adventures.
Below is a pseudo motion feature incorporated into Mei's story. As the doors open and close, the medium-sized blue Totoro joins Mei and mini Totoro on their adventure!
MEET YOUR FAVS
Should guests get within a closer view of our standees, that experience should feel just as magical up close.
Character standees would be printed vinyl with a matte finish, built from 1/2" of plywood on a mounted stand. The matte finish would prevent lighting sheer from inside the store. Additionally, UV protections would be kept in mind when picking final lamination options to ensure these characters do not fade from our hearts.
Should guests be ways away from the standees - costs could be brought down by utilizing 1/2" gator board as a replacement to heavy plywood.
