The Pokémon Field Guild Collection is a concept design package featuring creatures from the titular video game franchise. This collection is inspired by Pokémon Legends: Arceus, an adventure game where you explore a wild, period fantasy world filled with creatures called Pokémon. You spend your time in open, natural areas to observe, catch, and study Pokémon.
The game’s wildlife research expedition themes, set against the backdrop of 17th-century Edo period Japan, inspired the foundation of this collection. With relatively little official merchandise released since the game’s launch in 2022, this project became an opportunity to further explore and expand upon its richly layered world.
The overall design compositions draw from field journals, traditional Japanese woodblock stamps, and expressive kanji brushwork. Pokémon illustrations are inspired by sumi ink painting, emphasizing gesture, texture, and organic form. My thought process behind the stamps would be for easy documentation and identification upon flipping to a page within the field guide.
To modernize this historical visual language, I translated traditional motifs into a contemporary graphic system by introducing a bright, modern color palette, refining paint strokes for vector artwork, and lettering & typography combinations. The result allows the historically inspired iconography to feel functional as stamps, and relevant within a present-day design context.
